Brief Tutorial On Creating A 'Webcam' Video Clip Using VirtualDub
VirtualDub is easy to use but there are some important rules you must follow. Otherwise, even very short clips will be enormous (in terms of file size) and virtually unusable.
First, Set Things Up For Proper Formatting:
- Make sure your input devices are plugged in properly i.e. your webcam and mic.
- Click on the 'File' Menu, then 'Capture AVI' to start capturing your video.
- Once the new interface loads, click on the 'Video' Menu, then 'Preview'. Video from your webcam should now appear on screen.
- Now, click on the 'Video' Menu and then 'Format'. On this screen change the 'Resolution' to 320x240. You can experiment with increasing or decreasing it, but this tends to be the best trade-off between quality and minimizing file size. Next, set the 'Pixel Depth' to YUV9. Last, click 'Apply'.
- Next, click on the Video Menu again and click on 'Compression'. On this screen, select "Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec V1". Then hit 'OK'.
- Now everything is set-up for you.
Second, Record Your Clip:
Now you can actually record your clip. Here's what to do:
- Click on the 'File Menu', then 'Set Capture File'. Here's where you can enter the name of the file you want to create as well as the directory you want to store it in.
- Now, click on the 'Capture' Menu and select the first option 'Capture Video'. Your video clip will begin as soon as you press this. Hit the 'Escape' key or click on your mouse when you want the video to stop.
- Your video has now been created. You can view it using VirtualDub or you can go into your Internet Browser, locate the file, and have your browser play it through one of your media players. If you like what you see, and the file is not too large, upload it to TangoTime.
- Using the settings above, you'll be able to keep a 1 minute video clip to 1.8MB in size. So, with these settings you can comfortably produce a 3-5 minute clip -without the file size becoming unmanageable.
